Science fiction is becoming reality on Chinese streets: a humanoid robot has joined police operations in the southern city of Shenzhen, patrolling alongside human officers in what represents a glimpse into how Beijing is working to integrate robots and artificial intelligence into urban life.
In recent months, Shenzhen has deployed various robotic systems for police work, including humanoid robots, wheeled robots, four-legged robots, drones, and autonomous vehicles. The goal is to create a system where humans and robots work together, rather than replacing human officers entirely.
One experiment that has drawn particular attention involves a humanoid robot patrolling with officers in a commercial district. Standing 1.38 meters tall and weighing approximately 40 kilograms, the robot was designed to be especially compact and agile.
