At the IFA 2026 trade show in Berlin, iRobot presented an ambitious concept for home cleaning: the Roomba Duo, a two-unit robotic system in which a large cleaning robot serves as a mobile base station, dispatching a smaller companion robot to tackle narrow spaces and low-clearance areas.
Rather than relying on a single device to handle every surface and obstacle in a home, iRobot's concept divides labor between two robots with different capabilities. The larger unit handles primary floor cleaning across open spaces, while the compact robot separates from it and ventures under beds, sofas, and low furniture where the main unit cannot reach.
The primary unit of the Roomba Duo is a cylindrical robot standing relatively tall and weighing approximately 30 kilograms (about 66 pounds). It is designed for vacuuming, mopping, and tackling stubborn stains using steam technology.
The system features what iRobot calls the PowerSpin Max Roller Mop—a mopping roller that applies roughly 4.7 kilograms (about 10 pounds) of pressure to the floor. Inside the robot, a heating element generates steam intended to soften dried-on dirt before the roller washes and collects it.
During a demonstration at iRobot's booth, the robot passed over a pile of spaghetti, vacuumed the food remnants, and then mopped the soiled area. The company positioned this as an attempt to deliver cleaning performance closer to actual floor washing, rather than simply dragging a damp cloth across surfaces.
The most intriguing component of the system is the secondary unit: a small robot housed atop the main robot. A mechanical arm lifts and releases it onto the floor when areas inaccessible to the larger unit need cleaning.
Currently, the smaller robot is based on the Roomba Plus 575 Combo, standing just 8.35 centimeters (about 3.3 inches) tall. Its compact dimensions allow it to slip under sofas, beds, and low furniture—spaces where the taller, heavier main robot would struggle to operate.
Both units are designed to share a single home map through the iRobot app and coordinate cleaning tasks in real time. This allows the large robot to identify an area it cannot enter, deploy the smaller unit, and meanwhile continue working in another part of the home.
Despite the public demonstration and interest the product generated at the trade show, iRobot emphasizes that the Roomba Duo is not a commercial product at this stage but rather a conceptual prototype. The company has not announced a launch date, pricing, or commitment that the system will reach the market.
According to company representatives, the project's purpose is to gauge how consumers respond to the idea of multiple specialized robots working together in a single home. For iRobot, this may represent a way to solve a familiar limitation of robotic vacuums: larger robots typically offer stronger cleaning capability but struggle to enter low spaces, while smaller robots are more agile but limited in power, capacity, and mopping ability.
