Two Orthodox synagogues in Queens were vandalized overnight with bags containing feces and motor oil thrown at their entrances, according to local officials and police, in what community leaders described as the latest example of rising antisemitic incidents in the city.
The attacks were reported at Young Israel of Hollis and a second synagogue in the area, New York State Assemblymember Nily Rozic said. The New York Police Department’s Hate Crimes Task Force is investigating.
The vandalism was discovered as congregants arrived for morning prayers, according to local news reports.
Rozic, who represents parts of eastern Queens, condemned the incidents as “another outrageous example of the sustained hate faced by our community.” Jewish leaders in the area have expressed outrage and called for increased vigilance.
The NYPD has not released further details on suspects or motives, but the cases are being handled as potential hate crimes.
The incidents come amid a documented rise in antisemitic acts in New York City and nationally in recent years. Jewish organizations have reported increased security concerns at houses of worship and community centers.
