While fans wait for the next James Bond film, and the casting of a new 007, IO Interactive’s upcoming game 007: First Light is stepping into the spotlight, offering the first look at a reinvented Bond for a new generation.

Developed by the Danish studio known for its acclaimed Hitman series, First Light is an origin story that explores Bond’s early days as an MI6 recruit. Unlike previous Bond games that leaned heavily into action and gunplay, First Light promises a more authentic, cinematic experience.

“What does it mean to become 007?” asks creative director Christian Elverdam. “It’s not always about shooting.”

That approach helped IO win over Eon Productions, longtime gatekeepers of the Bond legacy. Instead of mimicking first-person shooters like GoldenEye 007, the game blends stealth, driving, hand-to-hand combat, and espionage, reflecting the tone and style of the films more accurately.

The project, announced back in 2020 as Project 007, gained momentum just as the Bond franchise entered a period of uncertainty. Since the Amazon-MGM merger, control over the character’s future shifted, ending decades of creative leadership by the Broccoli family. While Dune director Denis Villeneuve has been tapped for the next film, the identity of the new cinematic Bond remains a mystery.

Meanwhile, First Light fills the void with confidence. The game’s trailer teases iconic Bond elements: gadgets, stunts and villains, while offering a modern take shaped by today’s cultural and political landscape.

“Every Bond is a Bond of their time,” Elverdam says. “What we fear, what we admire. Those things evolve.”

With no new Bond on screen yet, IO’s game may end up defining the secret agent for the 2020s, before Hollywood does.
