Mashed Potato Mishap: Woman Sues for $1.5M
A Virginia resident has filed a massive $1.5 million lawsuit against a well-known restaurant chain, claiming she suffered severe and permanent injuries after slipping on spilled mashed potatoes

According to court documents, Tracy J. Renshaw was visiting the chain's Sterling, Virginia location on May 14, 2023. While walking toward the restroom, Renshaw allegedly slipped on a "foreign and slippery substance appearing to be mashed potatoes." The lawsuit states she fell forward, striking her face against the hard restaurant floor. Renshaw filed a massive $1.5 million lawsuit and accusing the restaurant managers in an "unreasonably dangerous condition for visitors".
Allegations of Negligence
Renshaw accuses the restaurant management of negligence, asserting they allowed the substance to remain on the floor for an unreasonable amount of time, failed to properly monitor the area, and neglected to post any warning signs.
As a result of the fall, Renshaw claims she suffered "great pain of body and mind," lost wages due to an inability to work, and incurred significant medical and hospital expenses.
The restaurant chain has denied the allegations. In its defense filings, the company stated it could neither confirm nor deny certain factual claims but explicitly denied that a dangerous substance on the floor caused the fall.
A Push for Customer Rights
Premises liability cases like this highlight a broader trend, as industry experts note that many dining establishments frequently cut corners on safety regulations to save time or labor costs.
Legal advocates emphasize that lawsuits of this nature serve as an important reminder to consumers: patrons have a fundamental right to a safe environment, and holding negligent owners accountable is essential for public safety.
While the restaurant chain prepares to fight the allegations in court, one thing is certain: If the jury sides with Renshaw, she will have more than enough cash to order all the mashed potatoes she wants. preferably, on a plate next time.
