A scandal has erupted within the pro-Palestinian “Freedom Flotilla” bound for Gaza, following allegations of sexual misconduct against a senior figure in the organization.

According to reports, Brazilian activist Thiago Avila, a member of the flotilla’s leadership, allegedly engaged in intimate relationships with three female volunteers who were under his authority, sparking internal tensions and criticism from pro-Palestinian groups.

The allegations were circulated by activist groups, which described the conduct as a breach of ethics and an abuse of power, particularly in the context of a mission presented as humanitarian. Critics said such behavior undermines the credibility of the initiative.

Avila, who has previously been photographed alongside Greta Thunberg during earlier flotillas, denied the accusations and claimed they were part of a smear campaign. He said an internal review found no evidence of wrongdoing.

One of the women mentioned in the reports dismissed the claims, attributing them to cultural misunderstandings and saying that physical closeness among activists was normal and not indicative of inappropriate relationships.

The controversy adds to earlier friction within the flotilla’s leadership. Thunberg reportedly stepped back from a leadership role during a previous voyage, citing frustration with internal disputes overshadowing the mission.

Palestinian critics have also taken aim at the flotilla more broadly, accusing it of performative activism and questioning why funds raised for the effort are not directed more directly toward aid for Gaza.

Organizers said an internal review found no evidence of misconduct, while noting that an ethics committee is in place to oversee participant behavior.
