Worshiper Stabs Teen Inside Brooklyn Synagogue

A 14-year-old Jewish boy was wounded in his hand after being cut by a 22-year-old worshiper inside Kedushas Yosef Werdan synagogue in Boro Park, Brooklyn, according to police. The incident occurred Monday evening around 7:20 PM at the synagogue on 54th Street near 17th Avenue.

Officers from the New York Police Department responded to 1675 54th Street following a report of the attack. According to NYPD statements to local media, the suspect used a cutting instrument to injure the teen's hand. The 22-year-old was taken into custody following the incident.

The injured boy declined medical treatment at the scene, police confirmed. No additional victims were reported. Both individuals involved, the teen and the suspect, were described as worshipers at the synagogue.

The New York Post reported that local sources identified the suspect as someone known to neighborhood residents who frequently visits synagogues in the area. This information came from community sources rather than official NYPD statements.

Neither the suspect's name nor the victim's identity has been released. Police have not disclosed details about what led to the attack, and the investigation into the circumstances and motive continues.

In September 2019, a father and son were stabbed outside a synagogue in Kensington, a neighborhood bordering Boro Park, following a confrontation with several individuals at the scene; a suspect was arrested and charged in that case.

In August 2024, a stabbing occurred outside the Chabad-Lubavitch headquarters in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. According to ADL documentation, the suspect shouted political statements and threatened the victim before the stabbing; he was subsequently charged with assault as a hate crime and sentenced to five years in prison in October 2025. While different in circumstances from the current case, it illustrates why any report of violence around a Jewish institution in the city draws significant attention.
