Tensions boiling over
Diplomatic rift erupts as Egypt condemns U.S. actions in Gaza hostage standoff
Senior Egyptian diplomats accuse the U.S. of blocking progress, insisting Washington’s tactics are jeopardizing regional stability and hostage safety.

Diplomatic sources in Egypt revealed to the Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar that the phone conversation held by Egypt's Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry with the American envoy Steve Witkoff was very tense and reflected an increasing concern in Egypt that the war in Gaza could turn into an open war of attrition.
Shoukry expressed his country's fear that the continued military operations of the IDF, particularly in Khan Yunis, would lead to a reconfiguration of the demographic map in the southern Gaza Strip and gradually push Palestinians towards the border with Egypt, which poses a direct threat to Egypt's national security.
The sources clarified that Cairo did not hesitate to accuse Washington of part of the failure in negotiations and criticized the way the American administration is conducting the negotiations.
