Syrian security forces have reportedly thwarted a high-stakes assassination attempt targeting Rabbi Michel (Michael) Khouri, a prominent figure in the city’s Jewish community. The operation led to the arrest of a five-member terror cell identified as being affiliated with the Lebanese organization Hezbollah.

The operation reached a critical turning point when special forces identified a female member of the cell attempting to plant an improvised explosive device (IED) in the Bab Tuma neighborhood. The device was placed directly in front of a religious figure's residence near the Mariamite Cathedral.

According to senior security sources, the cell’s primary target was Rabbi Khouri. The IED, which was rigged for remote detonation via communication devices, was safely neutralized and dismantled by specialized engineering units moments before it was set to explode. No injuries or property damage were reported.

After the bomb was neutralized, security forces arrested five individuals. Initial investigations revealed that the detainees had received advanced military training outside of Syria, specifically in the manufacturing and deployment of explosives.

Official Syrian sources stated the plot aimed to sow instability and undermine national security during the country's current transition phase.

The Syrian Ministry of Interior emphasized that security authorities are maintaining a strict preventative operations stance. They are closely monitoring sleeper cells to prevent attacks on public figures and densely populated civilian areas. The investigation remains active as authorities work to uncover the full scope of the conspiracy before the suspects are brought before a judge.
