While Israel awaits with bated breath for the hoped-for return today (Monday) of hostage Edan Alexander, international media outlets have extensively covered the news of his expected release from Hamas captivity in the Gaza Strip.

Most media outlets noted in their headlines that Edan Alexander is an American hostage, a fact that ultimately led to his release.

The BBC reported in its headline: "Israeli-American hostage Edan Alexander expected to be released by Hamas in Gaza."

The New York Times chose the headline: "Hamas says it will release the last American hostage in its custody," without mentioning in the headline Edan’s dual citizenship or the fact that he is an Israeli soldier.

This was their subheadline: "The announcement, which did not specify when the hostage, Edan Alexander, would be released, came as President Trump planned to visit the region," with the assumption that there is indeed a connection between Trump’s visit and Hamas’s gesture to the U.S. president.

"Hamas, the armed Palestinian organization (...), announced on Saturday night that it will release the last American citizen held captive in Gaza, days before President Trump is expected to arrive in the region for his first major overseas tour in his second term."

The various reports worldwide reflect the significant international attention surrounding the hostage issue and the efforts for their release.

However, so far, the story has not been featured in top headlines and appears to have less prominence in global public opinion, possibly as a result of the significant upheavals in the world surrounding Trump’s policies in the past 24 hours.

The BBC is among the few outlets so far to have gone into "live" mode, providing ongoing coverage of the latest developments regarding Edan’s expected release.
