Elon Musk is 54

Shivon Zilis Recreates Elon Musk's Childhood Birthday Cake and the Internet Melts

Shivon Zilis shared a side-by-side of Musk with his childhood clown cake and a perfect recreation --- and the birthday post went viral worldwide.

Elon Musk as a boy

Elon Musk may be colonizing Mars and reshaping the global economy, but on his 54th birthday, it was a clown cake from a childhood in Pretoria that stole the moment.

To mark the occasion, Shivon Zilis, Musk's partner and a director at Neuralink, posted a striking side-by-side collage on X. On one side, a vintage photograph of a young Musk in South Africa, beaming in front of a colorful clown-shaped birthday cake. On the other, an image of Musk today, celebrating with a painstakingly faithful recreation of that exact same cake, vanilla-based, adorned with bright decorations and a grinning clown face crafted from cream or fondant, matching the original detail for detail.

Zilis captioned the post simply: "Happy birthday, Rocket Man."

  • The image went viral almost immediately, generating waves of warmth across social media in a way that even Musk's most headline-grabbing announcements rarely do. Something about the sight of the world's wealthiest man grinning at a clown cake from his South African boyhood struck a nerve, a rare, unguarded glimpse of the person behind the empire.

It is not the first time Musk's sweet tooth has surfaced publicly. He has previously shared childhood photos of himself eating ice cream in a Mickey Mouse shirt, smeared and visibly delighted, and has spoken openly about his love of Indian food and other indulgences over the years.

For one day at least, the man building the future was happy to look back.
