Germany Drone Defense: Expansion After Russian Attack

Germany is planning a significant expansion of its defenses against drone attacks, cyber intrusions and sabotage operations, following a failed attack attempt last month at a domestic airport. A spokesperson for Germany's Interior Ministry confirmed the details, emphasizing that the measures are designed to address escalating threats.

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt addressed the growing dangers, stating that "these attacks will increase, but we can defend ourselves." His comments reflect an assessment that hybrid attacks attributed to Russia have become an integral part of daily reality across Europe.

The new plan was prompted by a serious incident in early August, when Germany formally accused Russia of orchestrating an attempted attack using explosive drones at Leipzig/Halle Airport. According to the findings, at least three drones were involved: one carrying explosives was discovered inside the secured area near cargo aircraft belonging to a Ukrainian company, but the explosive payload failed to detonate due to a malfunction in the triggering mechanism.

Moscow continues to firmly reject Western allegations of involvement in the airport incident or other sabotage operations. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov responded to the accusations with a warning that such claims represent "the beginning of a real war."

Under the new plan, police officers' operational capabilities will be expanded through mobile anti-drone units in major cities and infrastructure zones. In addition, a national cyber dome based on digital sensors will be established, and infrastructure companies will receive legal authority to actively counter aerial threats.

The plan also includes increased use of artificial intelligence and facial recognition technologies as part of the expanded defense system.

Following the August incident, Germany took decisive steps against Russia, including closing the Russian consulate in Bonn and evacuating a Russian cultural center. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul summoned the Russian ambassador for a reprimand at the Foreign Ministry, emphasizing the severity of the incident.

The German plan joins a broader European trend of strengthening defenses against hybrid threats. Other European nations are examining similar measures following a series of suspicious incidents attributed to hostile activity by foreign states.
