Twelve people were killed and nine others wounded in a mass shooting at the Jumpers Informal Settlement in Cleveland, Johannesburg, late Tuesday night.

Police said they responded to reports of a shooting at around 11:10 p.m. When officers arrived at the scene, they found multiple victims suffering from gunshot wounds at different locations inside the informal settlement.

Eight men and three women were declared dead at the scene. A twelfth victim, a man, later died of his injuries after being taken to hospital.

At least nine other people were transported to various hospitals for treatment. Their conditions were not immediately released.

According to initial reports, more than 10 heavily armed men arrived at the settlement in a white Toyota Quantum. The gunmen allegedly entered the area and opened fire on residents in several locations before fleeing in the same vehicle.

Police have not yet announced any arrests.

The motive for the attack remains unclear, and investigators are working to determine whether the shooting was linked to organized crime, a local dispute, or another cause.

The scale of the attack has shocked residents of the area and added to growing concern over violent crime in Johannesburg, where communities have faced repeated incidents involving armed groups and mass shootings.

Police are expected to continue combing the scene for evidence and taking statements from witnesses as the search for the attackers continues.
