A group of Democratic senators in the United States is preparing to force a floor vote in the Senate on Israeli activity in Judea and Samaria.
Senator Chris Van Hollen, a Democrat who has emerged as one of the most vocal critics of Israel within his party's senior ranks in recent years, has assembled enough support among fellow senators to compel a vote on the matter. The vote is expected to focus on what the senators characterize as systematic settler violence against Palestinians in Judea and Samaria.
Van Hollen has been among the sharpest critics of Israeli policy in the Democratic caucus. He has characterized Israel's military operations in Gaza as "war crimes" and has repeatedly claimed that Israel is "deliberately starving" children in the territory while intentionally blocking humanitarian aid.
Approximately a year ago, Van Hollen published an opinion piece in which he pledged to demand that the next Democratic president fundamentally transform U.S.-Israel relations. His proposed measures included heavy sanctions, a ban on arms sales and military assistance, and a series of other radical policy shifts.
