Iran-US Confrontation: White House Warns of Years-Long Standoff

Senior White House officials have privately warned President Donald Trump that the military and economic confrontation with Iran could drag on for years, potentially lasting until the end of his current term in January 2029, according to a report published overnight Wednesday by The Wall Street Journal, citing sources familiar with the discussions.

Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and other senior advisers have discussed the possibility that Iran will continue resisting the U.S. naval blockade and military pressure, the report said. The internal assessment stands in sharp contrast to Trump's public statements forecasting a rapid end to the conflict.

The warning comes after Iran launched a barrage of ballistic missiles this week targeting American military bases in Jordan, in retaliation for the U.S. destruction of five Iranian oil tankers. Jordan announced that 20 ballistic missiles were fired from Iranian territory toward its soil, with air defense systems intercepting and destroying 18 of them.

White House spokesperson Olivia Wiles responded to the Journal's report by stating that "President Trump has destroyed Iran's military capabilities and is crippling what remains of their failing economy through the most powerful naval blockade in world history and crushing sanctions."

She added that "only President Trump knows what he intends to do and when."

Trump himself addressed the situation early Thursday morning at a Republican conference, saying: "We're seeing some activity at Pickaxe Mountain. I would advise Iran not to try to be clever, because we will be forced to strike hard."

Trump stated Wednesday that the war with Iran would end before the midterm elections scheduled for November 3. When reporters asked why he believed the conflict would conclude immediately after the elections, he replied: "The Iranians can no longer hold out. They're desperate to try to influence the elections, so we get a nice, weak group of people there who will leave them alone and allow them to obtain their nuclear weapons."

The statement came ahead of the first midterm election conference in Republican Party history, opening Thursday in Dallas, Texas, with the president at its center. Party leaders hope Trump will energize the voter base and increase turnout in an effort to maintain the Republican majority in Congress.
