‘Light Shield’ and ‘Iron Beam M’: Rafael Launches Next-Gen Laser Air Defense
Rafael Unveils Breakthrough Laser Defense Systems to Counter Drone and Missile Threats
Israel’s Rafael Advanced Defense Systems is set to showcase advanced laser interception systems at the Paris Air Show, designed to counter aerial threats like drones and missiles. These innovative systems, including mobile and maritime variants, aim to revolutionize global air defense with cost-effective precision.

Rafael Advanced Defense Systems has just announced a ground-breaking lineup of laser-based interception systems, set to be showcased at the upcoming Paris Air Show. The Israeli defense giant revealed plans to offer these cutting-edge systems for international sale, following their proven success in operational intercepts during the ongoing conflict in Israel’s northern region. The flagship system, an upgraded “Light Shield,” is slated for delivery to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) by late 2025, capable of neutralizing drones, missiles, rockets, and other aerial threats at ranges of several kilometers for mere pennies per shot.
Rafael introduced two additional variants tailored for diverse combat scenarios. The “Iron Beam M” is a mobile laser system mounted on trucks, designed to protect sensitive and strategic sites by swiftly relocating as needed. Meanwhile, the “Lite Beam” is a lightweight, portable system integrated onto armoured personnel carriers and other combat vehicles, providing air defense against threats like drones and anti-tank missiles for maneuvering ground forces in hostile territory. “These systems represent a global first in scientific and technological breakthroughs, set to revolutionize air defense,” Rafael stated, emphasizing their cost-effectiveness and precision compared to traditional missile-based systems.
The company also unveiled a maritime version of the laser system, deployable on naval vessels to safeguard maritime assets, aligning with Israel’s need to counter threats from groups like Hezbollah, which has fired over 6,000 rockets since October 2023, per IDF data. Rafael’s laser systems, which consume minimal energy and eliminate the need for costly munitions, could reshape global defense markets, especially as nations face rising drone warfare, as seen in Ukraine and the Middle East. With international interest already piqued, Rafael’s innovations underscore Israel’s leadership in defense technology, offering scalable solutions to protect civilian and military assets amid escalating regional tensions.
