The battle against domestic radicalization reached a terrifying milestone this week as Michael Sam Teekaye Jr., a 22-year-old resident of Maryland, was sentenced to the maximum of 20 years in federal prison for orchestrating an ISIS-inspired mass murder plot. Teekaye, who openly admitted his desire to join the Islamic State, had identified specific Jewish organizations and pro-Israel groups as targets for a coordinated shooting spree. His arrest followed an intensive undercover investigation that revealed a man deeply committed to a global war against Jews and Western security forces. Even as the judge handed down the sentence, the young extremist remained defiant, making it clear to law enforcement that he views his two-decade prison term as nothing more than a temporary pause in his mission to carry out acts of terror.

The Plot to Target Jewish Communities

Teekaye’s primary ambition was to travel abroad and join the Islamic State–Somalia Province, an increasingly dangerous terrorist affiliate. He had meticulously planned a multi-leg journey that would have taken him through London, Turkey, and Ethiopia before reaching the terrorist training camps in northern Somalia. However, he made it clear to an undercover agent that he had a deadly contingency plan if his travel was blocked. If he could not reach the foreign battlefield, he intended to carry out a massacre on American soil, focusing his hatred on local Jewish populations and those who support the State of Israel.

According to federal prosecutors, Teekaye had already conducted surveillance on buildings and organizations he believed were pro-Israel, with the explicit goal to "gun down key members or anyone involved." He didn't just talk about violence; he took physical steps to prepare. He purchased ammunition, frequented a local gun range to hone his skills, and attempted to acquire a Kalashnikov K-9 9mm assault rifle. That purchase was ultimately blocked because Teekaye was already on probation for prior unlawful conduct, a failure that likely prevented a mass-casualty event.

A Vow of Future Violence

The depth of Teekaye’s radicalization was on full display during his arrest and sentencing. When federal agents moved in, he resisted violently, spitting at the officers and hurling threats. He even sent a photo of himself to an undercover contact while wearing a mask and brandishing a knife, claiming he sought "victory" through jihad. His most chilling statements, however, were directed at his future. He calculated that his release at age 42 would leave him plenty of time to execute his original plans.

"I’m just going to get out in 20 years and I’m just going to do it here. It will never stop. Jihad will never stop," Teekaye told the officers. He dismissed the severity of his sentence, stating, "You think 20 years is something? I’ll be like 40 when I get out, then I’ll just do it. I don’t care. It will never stop. I’ll come and I’ll kill your soldiers. I’ll kill you." U.S. Attorney Kelly O. Hayes noted that Teekaye’s actions represented a real-world commitment to mass murder, emphasizing that his fixation on killing Jews remained the driving force behind his radical ideology. As he begins his 20-year sentence, security officials are left with the daunting reality of a terrorist who sees his time behind bars as a training period for a war he intends to resume two decades from now.
