Calling him by his full Hebrew name "Rabbi Moshe Raphael" - a gesture signaling deep respect - the Rebbe handed Gafni a cup of wine for a blessing and issued what witnesses described as an unmistakable political directive.

"You must continue to care for the Torah world with pride, without fear and without intimidation," the Rebbe declared, according to multiple sources present at the event. "You are an emissary of the generation's Torah leaders and of all faithful Jewry, and you must not be intimidated by those who are trying to interfere and obstruct our path."

The Rebbe's son, Rabbi Yaakov Mordechai Hager, Av Beit Din of Vizhnitz Elad, noted that in these challenging and complex times for haredi Jewry, public representatives require special blessings "double and redouble." The Admor responded emphatically: "Certainly, and the reward will also be double and redouble."

The public blessing comes as Gafni navigates one of the most turbulent periods in recent haredi political history. Just days earlier, he successfully intervened to save eight Chinuch Atzmai Torah schools from immediate closure, securing a one-year reprieve following marathon negotiations with Education Minister Yoav Kisch and direct involvement from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office. The schools had faced shutdown over core-curriculum compliance disputes.

Simultaneously, Gafni has been managing intense coalition tensions over the proposed Basic Law: Torah Study, which critics argue would enshrine draft exemptions for yeshiva students. The bill has triggered fierce opposition from opposition parties and even internal coalition resistance, with controversial clauses recently stripped after ministers threatened revolt.

The Vizhnitz Rebbe's intervention carries particular weight given the current political climate. On the sidelines of the celebration, Gafni held an extended conversation with the Rebbe's confidant and gabbai, Benzion Shtenger, briefing him on the joint battle being waged by haredi representatives on behalf of yeshiva students and married Torah scholars. Gafni noted he had met with Prime Minister Netanyahu earlier that evening, demanding the government fulfill all its commitments and advance legislation supporting the Torah world through the Knesset.

The public nature of the Rebbe's endorsement signals the haredi leadership's determination to frame the draft battle as a fundamental defense of Torah study, even as security establishment officials warn of severe IDF manpower shortages following the prolonged war.
