Massive Wildfire Erupts in Haifa: Homes Evacuated, Pets Rescued Under Fire
Flames threaten homes in Romema and Givat Zemer; residents flee with pets as officials battle spreading blaze

A major wildfire erupted Wednesday in the northern Israeli city of Haifa, prompting emergency evacuations and a full-scale firefighting operation in the neighborhoods of Romema, Givat Zemer, and Ramat Sapir. The fire, fueled by strong winds and dry conditions, quickly spread through open terrain, raising alarms across the city.
Deputy Fire Chief Kfir Jenah assumed command of the emergency response, as multiple teams from the Haifa Fire Department were dispatched to protect residential areas. Fire and Rescue Services confirmed that large crews, led by Senior Officer Barak Silam, are actively working to control the blaze between Hanekin Road and Ramat Sapir.
By 13:45, two key fire fronts had been identified, one near the entrance to Givat Zemer and another just below Zalman Shazar Street. Residents living near the wadi were evacuated, many seen leaving with their pets. A daycare facility on Zalman Shazar Street was also evacuated, with children safely collected by their parents.
Municipal welfare teams have been deployed to assist displaced families if needed. The city of Haifa confirmed that schools in adjacent neighborhoods remain open and that updates will follow as the situation develops.
Evacuation Guidelines:
Eight firefighting planes from the Elad Squadron have been dispatched to contain the flames from the air. According to Fire and Rescue Services, the combination of dry brush and gusty winds has created challenging conditions on the ground.
Deputy Commander of the Coastal District, Gik Bressano, is also en route to take over regional command.
Mayor Yona Yahav is on his way to the scene to assess the situation firsthand.
Authorities continue to urge the public to remain alert, avoid the affected areas, and cooperate fully with all emergency directives.
