IDF Defense Drills in Eilat: Post-October 7 Preparedness

The Israel Defense Forces completed a comprehensive defense exercise in the Eilat and Arava region, led by Division 80 in coordination with the Israeli Air Force and naval forces. The drill involved dozens of multi-branch scenarios conducted simultaneously across multiple locations, testing operational response capabilities at all command levels.

Forces trained for complex scenarios including infiltration by sea vessels, hostage-taking incidents, anti-tank missile fire, mass casualty events, and breaches of military bases and civilian facilities—including hotels, schools, and beaches. The exercise included rapid deployment of forces, activation of the area's order of battle, swift transition from routine to emergency status, and decision-making processes under pressure.

As part of the drill, Division 96 was also mobilized without advance notice to manage a developing incident involving infiltration scenarios from the eastern border into the Dead Sea area. Forces were required to provide immediate responses to multiple threats while coordinating between different military branches.

The exercise joins a series of drills the IDF has conducted recently to assess readiness for various scenarios. Just days earlier, the military concluded the Chief of Staff's "Dawn Rising 2.0" assessment, which tested the ability to handle a multi-front, complex, large-scale emergency. During that assessment, all headquarters of regional commands, divisions, and branches were mobilized by surprise.

According to an IDF spokesperson, the military will conduct in-depth analysis of lessons learned from the exercise, identifying weaknesses and strengths with the goal of continuing to improve defense and readiness for various scenarios. The drill was conducted as part of the Operations Directorate's training schedule for 2026.

The extensive exercises are taking place against a backdrop of ongoing security tensions. Just two weeks ago, unusual fire was detected toward IDF forces in Syria near Tel Kudna in the buffer zone, and forces responded with mortar and artillery fire and an attack helicopter strike.

The Eilat and Arava exercise reflects the importance the IDF places on defending the southern border and the strategic Red Sea region. This area is considered one of the most sensitive from a security perspective and requires high readiness to deal with diverse threats.
