Israel-Gaza War
Former Jerusalem Post Editor: Even Assuming Hamas Numbers True, IDF Remains Remarkably Moral Army
In a post published on X/Twitter, former Jerusalem Post editor Yaakov Katz explained that, if we take both Hamas and the IDF at their word, the IDF does better at avoiding civilian deaths than anyone else.

In a post published on X/Twitter, former Jerusalem Post editor Yaakov Katz says that if we simply take both sides numbers for deaths at face value - Hamas for overall deaths (without distinguishing between terrorists and civilians) and the IDF's for terrorist deaths, the IDF campaign has actually killed fewer civilians proportionately than any other combatant in a war.
Per Katz, Hamas says 25,000 Palestinians have been killed in the Gaza war. This number has problems, including far too sweeping assessments even before rubble has been cleared, and not distinguishing between combatants and non-combatants.
But simply taking this number and matching it with the IDF's rough assessment that it has killed some 9,000 terrorists shows the IDF has killed about 1.5 civilians for every terrorist. This is a rate unprecedented in history for an intense, urban war like the one in Gaza. Even the UN generally presumes about 90% civilians killed and harmed for every combatant. Here, the numbers are far less.
