Shots. Fired.

Simcha Rothman: If you don't understand why Ronen Bar can be fired, retake civics class

Constitutional Committee Chairman MK Simcha Rothman mocked those who think Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's decision to convene the government to dismiss Shin Bet Director Ronen Bar.

MK Simcha Rothman.

Knesset Constitution Committee Chairman Simcha Rothman mocked those who oppose the idea of the government being able to fire Shin Bet Director Ronen Bar today (Sunday).

According to Rothman's statement on X:

Some important points:

  1. The government has the right to dismiss the head of the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency). There is no legal basis for the Legal Advisor's demand to be consulted on this issue.
  2. The Knesset has the right to express no confidence in the government.
  3. The public has the right, through democratic, equal, and secret elections, to replace the members of the Knesset.
  4. The head of the Shin Bet cannot dismiss the government, and neither can the Legal Advisor to the government.
  5. The Supreme Court cannot replace the people.
  6. Media mouthpieces mobilized in support of the head of a secret police force are not a characteristic of democracy.

If any of these points are not clear to you, there's no point in running to the Supreme Court. You should go to your civics teacher and ask for your money back.
