Global Catastrophe Resilience: Australia Ranks Safest

In the event of a nuclear war, deadly pandemic, or extreme natural disaster, Australia would likely be the safest place on Earth, according to new research that analyzed more than 200 studies and reports on global catastrophe scenarios.

A research team led by Florian Ulrich Jehn from the University of Hagen in Germany examined scenarios including nuclear conflict, asteroid impacts, massive volcanic eruptions, cyberattacks, and pandemics. Australia ranked highest in resilience due to its geographic isolation, capacity for massive domestic food production, and extensive industrial and mining infrastructure.

"As an island, it can easily close itself off and isolate, it produces enormous quantities of food, and it has large local industry and mining sectors," Jehn explained.

However, even Australia is not completely immune. Researchers noted its dependence on imported fuel, pharmaceuticals, and fertilizers as a significant weakness should global supply chains collapse.

Following Australia in the rankings were New Zealand, Japan, Switzerland, and Argentina. The researchers emphasized that the study's purpose extends beyond identifying "end-of-the-world shelters" to recognizing nations capable of maintaining food production, seed reserves, and industry, potentially serving as centers to help the world recover after a catastrophe.

Regarding Israel, the study indicates that direct effects of nuclear weapons would impact areas targeted during nuclear conflict. Locations, cities, and regions under attack would suffer massive damage, with nations involved in nuclear warfare, particularly those possessing nuclear weapons themselves, topping the target list.

This means Israel, the United States, Russia, Britain, France, China, India, Pakistan, and North Korea face the greatest danger, as do nations in conflict with these powers, including Ukraine vis-à-vis Russia, or Iran vis-à-vis Israel or the United States.

While the study does not provide precise country rankings, Israel is generally not presented as a nation considered safe in the event of a global catastrophe.
