Freeze Palestine

Slovenia Shifts Focus to Israel Alliance

The incoming prime minister announced plans to reverse the previous government's policy and move Slovenia's embassy to Jerusalem

Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Jansa arrives to participate in a Special meeting of the European Council in Brussels, Belgium on May 25, 2021.

Immediately after securing parliamentary confidence, Slovenia’s incoming Prime Minister, Janez Janša, announced a radical realignment of the country’s foreign policy regarding Israel.

Within twenty minutes of taking office, Janša ordered the removal of the Palestinian flag that had flown over the government complex for the past two years.

Janša leveled harsh criticism at the outgoing left-wing government, stating they had dragged bilateral relations with Israel to an unprecedented low. "Israel is a strategic partner because it contributes to regional stability and the fight against terrorism," Janša declared, emphasizing that Israel shares Europe's democratic values of liberty and the rule of law.

Reversing Recognition

A cornerstone of the new coalition government’s platform is the systematic reversal of the prior administration's Middle East policies. Janša stated that the previous government's recognition of a Palestinian state bypassed Slovenian law, announcing, "We will freeze this illegal decision."

He noted that this policy reversal was a strict precondition for his party during coalition negotiations, agreed upon by all partners.

Additionally, Janša pledged to relocate the Slovenian Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and vowed to oppose any attempts within the European Union to impose sanctions on Israel. "Israel is not Europe’s problem," Janša underscored, "but rather one of its most important allies."
