Clashes Erupt in NYC During Memorial for Killed Iranian Leader Ali Khamenei

Violence broke out overnight at Washington Square Park as a memorial rally for the late Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was met by a wave of counter-protesters celebrating the regime’s downfall. The confrontation required a significant NYPD presence to prevent the situation from spiraling into a full-scale riot.

"Communism is Dead": Tensions Boil Over

Approximately 200 pro-regime demonstrators gathered in the iconic Manhattan park late Friday, waving Iranian flags and holding a ceremony for Khamenei and those they described as "martyrs of American imperialism."

The atmosphere quickly turned volatile as counter-protesters arrived on the scene carrying American and Israeli flags. Shouts of "Communism is dead!" and "Free Iran!" rang out across the park, leading to heated verbal exchanges and physical shoving matches.

The NYPD intervened to separate the two factions, confirming that at least three individuals were arrested for disorderly conduct. The park was eventually cleared by approximately 3:00 AM Israel time.

The End of an Era

The rally follows the historic confirmation by Iranian state television last Sunday that Ali Khamenei was killed in a massive joint U.S.-Israeli military strike launched the previous week. Khamenei’s death marks the end of nearly four decades of a brutal, repressive regime that defined the Islamic Republic’s modern history.

While small pockets of supporters mourned in New York, the global reaction has been overwhelmingly celebratory.

Exiles and Allies Unite

In major cities across the globe, including Berlin, London, Amsterdam, and Toronto—Iranian exiles have taken to the streets in spontaneous celebrations. These gatherings have been notable for the prominent display of Israeli flags alongside the pre-revolutionary Iranian "Lion and Sun" flag.

For months, Iranian dissidents and Jewish communities have shared a common interest in the dismantling of the Tehran regime. This alliance was on full display this week, as activists celebrated the removal of a leader who presided over internal massacres and repeatedly vowed to wipe the State of Israel off the map.
