On Israel, Islam, and the Future of the West

Western Writer Sounds Alarm: “I Can’t Tolerate the Pollution of Our Cities by Pro-Palestinians”

In a bold interview with The Telegraph, bestselling British author and commentator Douglas Murray shares his views on Israel, radical Islam, and the cultural decay of Western society. He warns that pro-Palestinian protests signal a deeper hatred of the West—and Britain’s elites refuse to confront it.

In a wide-ranging interview with The Telegraph, British author and journalist Douglas Murray laid out his worldview regarding Israel, Islam, and the future of Western civilization. Murray, whose latest book "On Democracies and Death Cults: Israel, Hamas, and the Future of the West" has quickly climbed bestseller lists, has become a defining voice in today’s conservative discourse.

Born in Hammersmith in 1979, Murray earned scholarships to Eton and Oxford, publishing his first book at the age of 21. Initially a literary critic, he shifted to political writing with "Neoconservatism: Why We Need It" in 2006. His breakthrough came with "The Strange Death of Europe" in 2017, a sharp critique of European identity, immigration, and Islam.

In the interview, Murray expressed outrage at the pro-Palestinian protests that erupted after the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack:

“I can’t tolerate the pollution of our society and cities by people who clearly hate us,” he said. contrasting those hate rallies with pro-Israel rallies:
“At pro-Israel events, you see the flags of Israel and Britain. At anti-Israel demonstrations, you see flags of Palestine, Hamas, and Hezbollah.”

According to Murray, criticism of Israel often masks deeper anti-Western sentiment, which Britain’s elites are too timid to confront:

“This is a country in a state of total inertia, with successive governments passing down major problems for the next to deal with.”

On the war in Gaza, Murray forcefully rejects accusations of Israeli war crimes:

“These accusations began on October 8, just one day after the Hamas massacre. Charges of genocide are flung at Israelis casually, by people who have no idea what they’re talking about.”

He defends the IDF’s conduct as “ethical,” noting that:

“Hundreds of Israeli soldiers have died because they exercised caution instead of flattening everything indiscriminately.”

Having visited Gaza with the IDF, Murray proudly recounts standing at the location where former Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar was eliminated:

“I wanted to see the last thing the architect of October 7 saw on this earth.” That final view, he says, was “destruction — the complete obliteration of the society he tried, or pretended, to lead.”

When asked about his deep emotional investment in Israel, Murray explains:

“Judaism is the root of Christianity, and Christianity is what makes the West the West. If Israel falls, the fragile philosophical consensus around freedom and democracy will fall with it. Our society will be next.”

Though he once described himself as an atheist, Murray admits that:

“I go to church when I can, because I believe it’s necessary to stay connected to that tradition.” He adds that confronting “the real evil” of Hamas has forced him to reflect on the meaning of life and the nature of goodness.

Currently living in New York, Murray is in London promoting his new book. He recently met with U.S. President Donald Trump, and when asked about the meeting, he praised Trump’s support for Britain and his Middle East policies:

“His approach was essentially to give Benjamin Netanyahu a free hand.”
