Out of the blue
Peacock pulls the plug on "Based on a true story" – and we're heartbroken
What’s next for Kaley Cuoco and Chris Messina? We’ll be keeping an eye out for what these two stars have in store for us! That doesn't mean we won't shed a few tears about this surprising news though.

In a surprising move, Peacock has officially canceled the dark comedy thriller Based on a True Story after two seasons, leaving fans of the quirky series disappointed. The show, which premiered in 2023 and ran for 16 episodes, was a unique blend of humor and suspense that had garnered a loyal following and decent reviews. For viewers in Israel, the series was also available on Yes and HOT, broadening its international reach.
Based on a True Story starred Kaley Cuoco (The Big Bang Theory) and Chris Messina (The Mindy Project, Sharp Objects) as a seemingly average couple grappling with financial struggles and the challenges of a first pregnancy. Their lives take a wild turn when they suspect their plumber is a dangerous serial killer, prompting them to launch a true crime podcast that spirals into chaos. The series’ mix of dark humor, relatable characters, and thrilling plot twists earned it praise, with critics often highlighting the chemistry between Cuoco and Messina as a standout.
Despite its promise, Peacock announced the cancellation yesterday (Tuesday) as reported by multiple outlets. The decision came as a shock to many, especially since the show’s second season had launched in November 2024, and showrunner Annie Weisman had hinted at the potential for more stories. In an interview at the time, Weisman said, “We’ll have to wait and see, but it feels to me like there’s more to tell.”
Unfortunately, Peacock had other plans, pulling the plug alongside another series, the sports comedy Sweetpea, which was canceled after just one season.
The cancellation reflects a broader trend in the streaming industry, where platforms like Peacock are increasingly prioritizing high-impact, cost-effective projects over shows with moderate success. While Based on a True Story enjoyed decent viewership and critical reception, it may not have met the financial or audience thresholds needed to secure a third season in today’s competitive TV landscape.
For fans, the end of Based on a True Story raises the question: what’s next for its talented leads? Kaley Cuoco, no stranger to television success, has a history of bouncing back with exciting projects. Following her iconic run on The Big Bang Theory, she starred in and produced the hit thriller The Flight Attendant on HBO Max, which earned her critical acclaim. With her knack for blending comedy and drama, Cuoco is likely already on the hunt for her next big role, perhaps another producing venture or a return to sitcoms.
Chris Messina, known for his versatile performances in projects like Sharp Objects and The Mindy Project, also has a bright future ahead. His ability to seamlessly shift between comedic and dramatic roles makes him a sought-after talent in Hollywood. Rumors are already swirling about potential film roles or a return to prestige TV for Messina, who has consistently impressed audiences with his depth and charisma.
While Based on a True Story may have ended sooner than expected, its 16 episodes remain available for streaming on Peacock, yes, and HOT, offering a binge-worthy experience for those who haven’t yet discovered the series. For now, fans can only hope that Cuoco and Messina will reunite for another project or that another network might see the potential in reviving this gem of a show.
