A 91-year-old man has reclaimed his title as the oldest person to complete the Appalachian Trail, finishing the grueling 2,193-mile trek despite extraordinary physical challenges. Dale "Grey Beard" Sanders fell 71 times during his journey, six of them serious falls, and required brief hospitalization, yet he persisted until reaching the summit of Mount Katahdin in Maine.

The Appalachian Trail ranks among the world's most renowned long-distance hiking routes. Stretching along the eastern United States from Springer Mountain in Georgia to Mount Katahdin in Maine, it passes through 14 states, dense forests, and mountainous terrain. Completing the entire trail is considered a significant challenge even for young, experienced hikers.

Sanders, who first set the age record in 2017 at 82, finished his journey on Monday and paused to pray at the summit marker. "I had to thank G-d, and I had to thank my support crew and everyone who got me here," he said.

During one fall in Vermont, he crashed forward among rocks, injuring his hands and legs. "Thank G-d nothing was broken. I was bruised, but I didn't wipe off the blood, I just kept walking," he recounted. Later, he lost feeling in his left hand and was taken to a hospital over concerns about a stroke, but doctors determined it was a pinched nerve.

Sanders, a U.S. Navy veteran, holds other age-related records, including being the oldest person to paddle the entire length of the Mississippi River. According to him, the record became a secondary goal along the way: "The most important thing is that people get motivation and encouragement from my efforts."
