Violent clashes broke out between Beitar Jerusalem supporters and AEK Larnaca fans in the Larnaca area Thursday ahead of a Europa League match, resulting in six arrests and injuries on both sides.
One Israeli fan was arrested during the incident. Cypriot police reported two people, reportedly Israelis, were injured. Additional injuries were sustained by local Cypriot supporters.
According to Kan News, "Beitar Jerusalem fans were attacked by pro-Palestinians before the team's game against AEK Larnaca in Cyprus. Several of them were injured and taken to the local hospital."
The clashes occurred in the hours before Beitar Jerusalem's scheduled match against AEK Larnaca. Cypriot authorities responded to the violence and are preparing enhanced security measures for the game, which is expected to proceed as planned.
Beitar Jerusalem's supporter group, known as La Familia, has been involved in fan violence incidents abroad in previous years. The incident Thursday adds to a pattern of tensions involving Israeli supporters at matches in Cyprus and other European venues.
The match between the two clubs is scheduled to continue under heavy police presence.
