An attempt to smuggle hundreds of bags of tobacco into the Gaza Strip was disrupted during a routine security inspection at the Lachish crossing.

The contraband was found meticulously concealed inside a shipment of wheelchairs, which was arriving as part of an international humanitarian aid donation intended for residents of the enclave.

The illicit operation was detected and halted by security inspectors from the Ministry of Defense's Land Crossings Authority, working in coordination with representatives from the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT).

Tighten the strap in Gaza Strip

Security screenings for all goods entering the Gaza Strip have been significantly expanded and tightened recently due to a sharp rise in sophisticated smuggling attempts.

Following the discovery, the head of COGAT, Major General Yoram Halevi, ordered the immediate launch of both a security and criminal investigation to identify and prosecute all parties involved in the smuggling ring. COGAT officials emphasized that the incident represents a cynical exploitation of medical aid and severely damages the credibility of humanitarian relief mechanisms.

Officials added that international organizations coordinating these shipments bear full responsibility for their contents, and any violation of established protocols will result in immediate enforcement actions.

"Hamas seeks every opportunity weaponizing the humanitarian space"

Major General Yoram Halevi stated, "While Hamas routinely spreads false narratives regarding medical shortages in Gaza, and many international actors choose to echo them, the reality repeatedly proves otherwise. While Israel facilitates the entry of medical aid and equipment, Hamas and other networks do not hesitate to exploit these medical shipments for smuggling and enrichment. This is a severe violation that highlights the critical importance of strict security screenings. Because Hamas seeks every opportunity weaponizing the humanitarian space for its own needs, we will continue to reinforce monitoring mechanisms, conduct rigorous inspections on every truck, and act with absolute zero tolerance against any entity attempting to abuse aid channels."
