While international attention has focused on developments along Israel's northern border, the IDF has been conducting a methodical campaign to dismantle Hamas's underground terror infrastructure in the northern Gaza Strip. The operation represents a fundamental shift in how Israeli forces are approaching long-term security in the region.
The Northern Brigade, operating in coordination with the elite Yahalom combat engineering unit under the command of the 252nd Division, has spent recent months executing a comprehensive military and engineering operation targeting subterranean routes east of the Yellow Line buffer zone, with particular emphasis on the Beit Hanoun area.
Systematic Destruction of Terror Infrastructure
According to the IDF Spokesperson's Unit, forces have successfully demolished approximately 14 kilometers of tunnels and underground passages during the operation. The extensive network, which Hamas operatives referred to as their "metro" system, served as a critical component of the terrorist organization's military capabilities.
Before detonating the tunnel systems, combat engineers conducted thorough reconnaissance operations. The searches revealed fully equipped living quarters designed for extended stays, substantial weapons stockpiles, and advanced communications systems that Hamas terrorists utilized to coordinate attacks against Israeli forces.
Similar operations in other parts of Gaza have uncovered tunnel networks containing dozens of grenades, Kalashnikov rifles, RPG launchers, and explosive devices.

Ongoing Combat Operations
The engineering work has proceeded under active combat conditions. Northern Brigade forces have simultaneously engaged terrorist cells attempting to disrupt the demolition operations. Over recent months, approximately 70 Hamas operatives who violated ceasefire agreements and posed immediate threats to Israeli soldiers have been eliminated in these confrontations.
Military officials have emphasized that even if individual terrorists survive combat operations, they will return to find their organizational infrastructure completely dismantled.
This strategy mirrors broader IDF operations across Gaza, where forces have worked to ensure that Hamas cannot reconstitute its military capabilities. Previous operations in the Yellow Line buffer zone have demonstrated the effectiveness of this approach in preventing terrorist organizations from threatening Israeli border communities.
