The 78th Independence Day state ceremony honors 12 individuals selected for their contributions to Israel’s strength and renewal. The list of lighters reflects the diverse sectors of the nation, ranging from security and defense to science and entrepreneurship. Among those selected is Talik Gvili, the mother of Sgt. Maj. Ran Gvili, who serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made, alongside the government’s coordinator for hostages and missing persons, Brig. Gen. (res.) Gal Hirsch.

Representing the military, Col. M. from the Air Force and Maj. Nurit R., a combat intelligence officer wounded on October 7 and again later in service, light the IDF torch. Technological and economic leadership is represented by Gili Raanan, a venture capitalist and founder of Cyberstarts, and film producer Moshe Edri, recognized for his impact on Israeli culture. The medical community is represented by Prof. Dina Ben Yehuda, a leading hematologist at Hadassah Medical Center, while culinary excellence is highlighted by celebrity chef Assaf Granit.

The list also includes Ora Hatan, a resident of Shtula who maintained her presence on the northern border during intense times, and Rabbi Avraham Zerbib, a state rabbinical judge serving in the reserves. Tamer Atallah, a member of the Druze community, and businessman Roni Inesaz, known for his work assisting Jewish communities, complete the list of torch bearers. Their collective stories of overcoming adversity and driving innovation serve as the foundation for this year’s theme of national renewal.
