Israel's Veteran Performers
Israel has long recognized that arts and culture are difficult fields from which to earn a living, particularly in old age. This led to the establishment of organizations like ACUM and other artists copyrights organizations designed to ensure artist's welfare and royalties from their work, allowing them to support themselves with dignity even when unable to continue performing.
Among Israel's veteran performers, notable figures include respected actresses Gila Almagor and Rivka Michaeli (who still performs in running stage productions to audience acclaim), and veteran actress Lia Koenig (who recently appears on television in commercials and lends her voice to radio programs helping senior citizens navigate social media). Male artists include Yehoram Gaon, Boaz Sharabi, Danny Sanderson, and Gidi Gov, along with beloved veteran singer Shalom Hanoch, who will celebrate his 80th birthday this coming September.
A recurring question among fans of veteran bands, whether Israel's "Tislam" Band or Mick Jagger's aging Rolling Stones, is whether artists have an official retirement date, or whether they continue performing even when connected to a respirator instead of an amplifier (as guitarist and singer Yitzhak Klepter RIP actually did during the final tour of "Kaveret" band before his passing).
The answer, exemplified by Dolly Parton's life, is that as long as artists feel they have strength to give, they should continue doing what they do best. And if they created inspiring songs or books, these masterpieces will keep them alive for the next genetations.
