Israeli police thwarted an attempted terror attack in the central city of Lod on Wednesday morning after a suspect wielding a knife charged at an elite Yasam counter-terrorism fighter and attempted to stab him.
According to a police statement, officers from the Lod police station spotted the suspect holding a knife during routine police activity in the city and ordered him to stop. Instead of complying, the suspect began running toward a team of Yasam fighters operating in the area and, police say, attempted to stab one of them.
The fighter opened fire on the attacker and neutralized him. No Israeli security personnel were injured in the incident.
Large police forces from the Central District have secured the scene and are collecting evidence. The circumstances and background of the attack are still under investigation.
Central District Commander, Major General Amir Cohen, is en route to the scene to conduct an assessment.
